PRE-ADVENTURE

INTRODUCE NEW CHARACTER: Karn Gudin

ALL CHARACTERS WILL HAVE BEEN HAVING NIGHTMARES THIS WEEK – See Private Player Section

START GAME AT 9am FRIDAY. THERE IS ONE HOUR LEFT TO DONATE 10,000 GP TO THOTH-HERMES TO AVOID “Puddings Syndrome”.
XAVIER must be present at BLUEWATER INN between 9am and 10am – two mages and two priests arrive at 9am to complete magical protection of Sister’s room.

BAD DREAMS: All characters have had bad dreams this week. There is a chance that poor sleep will affect performance: ALL MUST ROLL Percentage Dice. 11 – 40 percent = -2 on all rolls. 10 or less percent = -5 on all rolls.

PERFORM (at Blue Water Inn) Make 5 Entertainment Checks. DC 25 THREE SUCCESSES will guarantee good crowd appreciation and free rounds of drinks from SOMEONE. 4 successes will raise status of each member by ONE POINT and confer an EXTRA Status Point to Xavier. 5 successes will get all of the above but GAIN 2 STATUS POINTS each instead of one and two EXTRA Status Points of Xavier!! Add + 2 to all rolls (apart from NEW CHARACTER) and Xavier gets a re-roll for himself if required.
Also remember ARCAEL will cast EAGLES SPLENDOUR giving + 4 to CHA and + 2 to skills.

HOWEVER, Peter and The Puddings playing on the same night will have an impact:
51 per cent: Massive Impact – room less than half full. -5 to all rolls. ALL STATUS POINTS REDUCED BY 3
21 per cent: Big Impact – Less than full attendance. -3 to all rolls. ALL STATUS POINTS REDUCED BY 2
11 per cent. Moderate Impact – Venue fairly full but not such a good vibe. -2 to all rolls. ALL STATUS POINTS REDUCED BY 1
1 to 10 per cent. No impact – Full House. No detrimental effects.
(Nakresh has blessed the performance – Goran to be made aware of this privately – HE WILL OWE A FAVOUR TO NAKRESH).
DIVINE INTERVENTION: If 10,000 GP was donated to Church of Thoth-Hermes then PUDDINGS penalties will not apply – Bribes given to populace not to attend the PUDDINGS Gig.

Check total STATUS POINTS for each character as well as total HONOUR POINT AWARDS: Remember the new Tier System: Arcael: Tier 3; Goran, Xavier: Tier 2, Karn Gudin, Saabu: Tier 1.

Hook

Grapevine News about Priests dying strangely recently is confirmed by Cassandra per Aten. Rumours have it that three priests have died strangely so far – Firstly the High Priest of Aten a few months ago – it was presumed to be an illness, then a priest of Horus was said to have died of poisoning, and more recently a younger lay priest of Thoth-Hermes had been found slain in the Grand Souk. (Of these, the first two were nothing to do with the Assassin, but the third was a trial ASSASSINATION by Mehmet – although Mehmet does not believe blood of the priest to be worthy, so he has others in mind. But he is happy with the result.

SPECIAL PLEA FROM CASSANDRA PER-ATEN TO SAABU THEET FOR HIM TO HELP UNCOVER THE PLOT AND PUT A STOP TO ANY FURTHER PRIEST ASSASSINATIONS!

EXTRA HOOK:
Saabu Theet has been researching stuff pertaining to the Emerald Tablets of Wisdom, reading about the Pyramid of Black Sands. Just before gig at Blue Water Inn, he hears that a caravan from the Deep South is staying at The House of Mehmet and that one of the merchants, Kenneth Zabinda, has been talking about “The Village of Black Sands”. (This is one of the places it is thought that the Emerald Tablets of Wisdom could have been taken to.)

Summary

Mad cultist Mehmet al-Fasri is killing priests believed to have closed the Bottle of Madness. He believes he can find the Bottle and use the blood of the priests to open the Seal and control the evil djinn to serve him. Characters must determine the next victim and try to trap him into revealing himself before Mehmet opens the bottle containing the Gibbering Herald – Careful though, there is an invisible stalker guardian that will attack any NON CULT member who touches the bottle.

Ley Lines

Ley lines within the city are suppressed. However, outside of the city:
Middle Sea Line: North to South through Siwal for a mile on either side and veering North East through the Sands of Sorrow: WEAK LEY LINE (lev 3 spells): Locked – Penetrating Spell (Ley Line Magic overcomes any energy resistance) This line changes to Titanic when it joins the Green Nuria River miles to the South. (Locked: Echoing Spell) DC= 10 + Lev of Spell to use!

Red Herrings

Add a couple of NPC red herrings at the caravanserai to deflect from Mehmet.

Adventure starts with attack on the Cleric, Saabu Theet.

Make sure there is some discussion of rumours – e.g. priests killed – three so far – make sure characters know some of the NPC details – e.g. Ali al-hambra (barber), Anushka Diwali (spice merchant), Hassan al-fasri (Gatekeeper), Orin Ironale (engraver), etc.
GAME STARTS WITH ATTACK ON CLERIC ON THE WAY TO THE CARAVANSERAI.
Assassin will probably escape – ring, pass without trace, spider climb, three cultists blocking way, disguise and conceal scent.

Detectives

(First Use Cumulative Rumours to see if Team get 30+ for list of Priests – See p101) Each person on the list had been instrumental in driving out the Cult of the Howling God from the city several years ago. First ATTACK is a failure for the Assassin. Speak to Temel for clues.

See Rumours on p101 With prior knowledge of priests being killed, and attempt on the life of SAABU THEET, PCs should now be aware that the assassin is targeting priests. Prominent priests known that may be on the list include: Temel (Anu Akma), Jafsa daughter of Yusra (Isis), Masahir al-Jilan (Nun and Naunet), Qusay abd-R’ad (former paladin and priest of Aten), Wasimah the Eldest (Thoth-Hermes), Nabil abd-Zaahir (Acting High Priest of Aten). Party will know that former high priest of Aten recently died. They had seen his grave in the Necropolis. Party should work from the list above to try and determine who assassin will attack next. MIX UP THE ORDER.

The Bottle of Madness p101

Many years ago, Priests of the Sun God (ATEN) sealed the bottle so the Gibbering Herald was contained. Weakness: Blood of the Sun God’s priest weakens the seal. (Mehmet believes he needs the holy blood of several priests – at least three – to break the seal.) Once opened, the creature is free although it takes 1d4 minutes to appear. (Cue whistling and whooshing sounds).
The bottle has a Guardian INVISIBLE STALKER that will attack any NON Cult Member who touches the bottle. If it is killed another will appear 24 hours later. It can return to the bottle if it wishes. Only when the Gibbering Herald is slain can the bottle be destroyed.

Three possibilities of RELEASE:

1. When Nabil Abd-Zaahir is killed – Mehmet intends to open the bottle in public place or even at the Royal Palace. (Remember INVIS STALKER)
2. If Mehmet is being attacked by the party at time of Nabil Abd-Zaahir’s attack – he uses blood of the wounded priest to release the GIBBERING HERALD.
3. Party kill Mehmet before he can release the beast but wish to release it themselves with the blood of a Cleric – Saabu’s blood will suffice.

Mehmet Killed

Whenever Mehmet is killed, remember his treasure:
Portable Hole, 3,200 GP, Three Pearls (1,500 GP), Bronze Griffon Figurine of Wondrous Power, 2 Potions of Cure Mod Wounds, Potion of Spider Climb, Ointment of Conceal Scent (3 applications), Potion of Pass without Trace, Studded Leather + 2, Buckler + 1, Kukri + 1, Scimitar + 2, Heavy Crossbow + 1 and 20 bolts, Ring of Invisibiity, Ring of Protection + 1.

INVISIBLE STALKER – constantly invisible – not subject to INVIS PURGE – Extra 20 (34) on all STEALTH CHECKS40 (54) if keeping still. INIT +8, Concentrate Slam attacks on person who touched the bottle, but Combat Reflexes will also allow AoO: (4 x AoO) – OUTSIDER AIR ELEMENTAL – Fly 22, Acro 14, Perception 12

GIBBERING HERALD p103 – See p102 for Description of Arrival – 6 attacks, many special attacks but main weakness is that movement is very slow – 10’ per R.

N.B: LAST FIGHT COULD INVOLVE INVIS STALKER, GIBBERING HERALD, MEHMET AND THREE OF HIS FOLLOWERS ALL AT MORE OR LESS THE SAME TIME!

END OF ADVENTURE:

Mehmet should be killed or brought to justice, the Gibbering Herald should be released and killed, then the ARTEFACT destroyed. The House of Mehmet will be closed for mourning, and will eventually be run by Mehmet’s sister, Pembe umm Haroun – LG scholar.
There is no monetary reward for this adventure, although the Sultan may be grateful if he can be convinced that he was saved from a serious threat. However, this reward is more likely to be a ROYAL FEAST arranged for the party.
